A Look at ADA Guidelines for Handicap Bathrooms

    Last updated 9 months ago

If you or a loved one has a physical handicap that makes it difficult to get around safely and comfortably at home, it's time to consider some effective alterations that can make life a little easier. One great place to begin your renovations is the bathroom. Here’s a look at some ADA guidelines for handicap bathrooms:

Level Thresholds and Wide Door Frames

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), one of the most important factors to consider when planning your bathroom remodeling project is the door frame. Doors should be 32 inches wide in order to accommodate walkers and wheelchairs. Furthermore, each door should be installed to open away from the room for the sake of safety and convenience. Lastly, be sure that the threshold is at an even height with the ground to enhance accessibility.

    Toilet Seats that Accommodate Wheelchairs

When choosing new toilets for your bathroom remodeling project, chose models that are at least 16 ½ inches tall without the seat. This height is ideal for those who need to get in and out of a wheelchair, and it will not make using the restroom any more challenging for residents or guests without a disability. Never place a rug near the toilet, as it can make rotating a wheelchair more difficult.

    Accessible Sinks and Bathtubs

One fixture that many overlook when undergoing a handicap-friendly bathroom remodeling project is the sink. Be sure to install sinks without a cabinet below, as these make it more difficult for a person in a wheelchair to wash his hands. Also, choose a walk-in bathtub that has an entrance door and a seat inside for you or your loved one to use while bathing.

    Accessories

ReBath by Schicker can help you create a functional and attractive bathroom that follows ADA guidelines. ReBath carries the Invisia line of accessories including towel bars, toilet paper holders, soap dishes and more.  They double as grab bars that are elegantly designed for function in the bathroom. (invisiacollection.com)  From  grab bars to wheelchair accessible sinks, we know exactly what type of modified features to include in this type of specialty remodel.
